Sunbeam Center

Sunbeam Center opened doors of its centre of excellence in September 2003 for children with Special Educational Needs up to 12 years.The specially designed school is located next to the Kindergarten in the secure confines of the Al Bayyan Gardens Compound, Near to Al Saad Sports Stadium. A large bright multi purpose hall feeds 3 large fully resourced Special Education classrooms, 2 Therapy room with a third Therapy room located outside. The British Special Educational Needs (SEN) curriculum is used to teach all the children, along with the child’s own Individual Educational Plan. There is a large fully equipped outdoor playground including grassed area, sandpit and cycling space. At the heart of the Kindergarten is a team consisting of, Principal, SEN Teachers, Educational Psychologist, Occupational Therapist, Speech and Language Therapists, Family Support Specialist, and assitants dedicated to encourage your child to reach their full development. Each child is encouraged to grow in independence to prepare for formal schooling. Sunbeam also has a UK Special Educational Needs Consultant who visits Doha 3 times a year.

OUR MISION AND VISION
Our aim in Sunbeam Center is to give each child in our care every opportunity to fully meet his or her potential academically, personally and socially. He or she will be encouraged to achieve the maximum feasible development, confidence and independence. We aim to excel in developing academic strengths and achievements, build on social skills and confidence for all our students and to provide support and guidance for their families where possible.
We aim to ensure that ongoing education and care is provided for all the children in our care. As part of our longer term development plan we envisage being in a position to extend our position, offering seamless and successful transition to higher education and indeed mainstream education for our Special Needs children. We aim to provide the tools for our children to approach life with confidence and the ability to succeed.

  • Parents are valued members of the team who aim to educate and care for their child. They will be fully informed and consulted in all decisions made regarding their child’s care and education at Sunbeam.

The Specialist Team
The specialist team in Sunbeam Center consists of a group of highly qualified professionals, all of whom have extensive experience in working with children with special educational needs. Each member of staff has been chosen for their individual qualities as well as their expertise and qualifications. As we all are aware, it takes more than just qualifications to offer a first- class, confidential service to both children and their families. These professionals have backgrounds in many specialised fields, including work based in schools, hospitals, clinics, private nursing homes, child development centres and private homes over the course of their careers. This experience will enable them to work confidently with the many varied challenges they will face whilst working at Sunbeam Center of Excellence.
Our teaching staff, (special educators), are all highly qualified and confident in their field, with vast experience in working with children with special needs. All have experience of providing a multi-sensory individual educational programme (I.E.P) for children with a diverse range of special educational needs and all are caring, approachable and highly professional people; sensitive to the needs of both children and the parents of the children in their care.


Sunbeam Center Facilities

The Classrooms
There are, at this stage; four classrooms. Each classroom has a qualified Special Educational teacher and a number of dedicated assistants. The maximum number of children per class is 10 depending on the needs of the children, some classes are smaller. The classrooms are fully resourced with designated areas i.e working area (individual and group), book corner, art and craft area, quiet area (a ‘safe place’ for children to rest, take ‘time out’ from their peers if feeling stressed).

The Multi-purpose Hall
There is a large multi-purpose hall area in Sunbeam Center that is used for a variety of purposes; Physical education/ Music therapy/ Occupational therapy, Games/ Art and Drama and teaching. The hall is also used to hold workshops and staff/parent training.

Healthy Eating
We like to promote in Sunbeam Center healthy eating at Sunbeam Center. Here is our recommendation list for healthy snacks to bring to school:

  • Yoghurts
  • Cereals
  • Crackers and/or plain biscuits
  • Water/ Juice

The following food is not allowed for snack at Sunbeam:

  • Chocolate and/ or chocolate biscuits
  • Sweets and lollipops
  • Nuts (due to allergies)
  • Chewing/ bubble gum

These rooms in Sunbeam Center have been carefully planned in order to fully accommodate children with physical needs. There are separate girls’ and boys’ bathrooms, each having three toilets; one in each that is designed for wheelchairs. Additionally there is another room available for children who need to be changed. There are easily lockable doors that can be opened from the outside. The low sink units are suitable for children in wheel chairs as well as able-bodied children.

Bus Service
Sunbeam Center is happy to be able to offer a bus service to parents in need of transport to and from school for their children. We have a 25 seat bus that is fitted with lap strap safety belts. The bus is regularly maintained and cleaned to ensure safe and clean transportation for your convenience.
Sunbeam Center provide a male bus driver and two female staff to accompany the children both on collection and return journeys for maximum safety whilst your child rides on the school bus. The driver’s duty is to drive the bus safely to and from school only. The ladies duty is to ensure your child is picked up safely, seated safely with seat belt on and returned safely to you.The bus runs on strict timings and routes depending on the numbers of children on the bus and the location of your homes. It is the responsibility of the parent to have their child ready for pick up in the morning from 06:00 the bus will give a missed call you must bring your child immediately to the bus (bus waiting time is 4 minutes only).
Sunbeam Center is A place for your child on the school bus is subject to seat space (first come first served) and whether or not the location of your home is on the school bus route.
